SECTION 3 – EXTERNAL STORAGE DEVICES.
As mentioned earlier, digital videos take up a tremendous amount of space
and unless you have massive hard disc capacity in your machine, you really
need to be thinking about recording the ‘finished product’ onto something
external such as a large external hard drive or media such as tape, CD or
DVD.
OPTION 1 – THE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE.
Nowadays, it’s possible to buy exceptionally large hard drives which can be
carried around from computer to computer and connected as required by a
Firewire or USB2 lead. In a school situation, eg, it might be possible to pass
around a portable hard drive to use while editing video. Individual teachers
might also want to take some footage home for editing when they get a bit
more time!
Remember that (apart from Firewire) nothing will be fast enough for video
transfer apart from USB2 . Although it WILL work, ‘ordinary’ USB1 won’t
be fast enough. This means that you either have to have a machine with
USB2 sockets already fitted or add a card.
A 120GB external hard drive with
USB2 connection.
The hard drive connected to a USB2
PCI card. (This would normally be
fitted to a desktop PC.)
The hard drive connected to a USB2 PCMCIA
cardbus adaptor (For use with laptops that don’t
already have USB2 sockets.)
