SECTION 2 – CONNECTING YOUR DV CAMERA
TO A COMPUTER.
The camera can be connected to a PC so that the video can be downloaded
for editing. After editing it can be……
Sent back to the little tape in the camera for storage (This gives
highest possible quality because the signal always travels by Firewire
– so doesn’t suffer loss of quality. Nevertheless, storing on the little
tapes means you always have to play them back through the camera,
which is not particularly convenient in a classroom.)
Stored on the hard disc. (Good quality, but uses an unbelievable
amount of space.)
Recorded onto a CD or DVD. (You obviously need a built in ‘burner’
or an external one connected by a fast connection such as USB2.)
Quality is quite good, but space on CDs is still a bit limited for longer
videos. DVD is better.
Sent down a lead to a VCR for recording on a standard VHS tape.
(This is a convenient way to store the ‘end product’ because most
classrooms and homes can access a VCR easily. Space isn’t a big
issue, but quality suffers quite a bit when the signal is transferred by
S-Video. Transfer by ‘AV’ leads is even worse. You also have to have
an ‘S-Video Out’ or ‘AV Out’ socket on your PC.)
FIREWIRE OPTIONS.
Firewire is always the best method of connection. Anything else will be
almost unacceptably slow and quality will deteriorate. Firewire also allows
the computer to take direct control of the camera during editing. If your PC
has a ‘Firewire’ socket you’re all set to go. If not, you’ll need to add a
Firewire socket on a card (see below). Note that:
The term ‘Firewire’ is an Apple invention. On PCs it’s usually called
IEEE 1394! Same thing – different name!
